Oxford boys, girls take county track titles

It was business as usual for the Oxford High boys’ and girls’ track teams last week as both teams captured first place in the Calhoun County Track and Field Championships held at Jacksonville State University.

The boys scored 271 points as they out-distanced Anniston by 135 points.

Over on the girls side the Jackets had 222 points to 134 points for second place Anniston.

Jasmine Bowie took a first in the 100-meter dash and a second in the 200-meter dash. Victoria Rimpsey came in second and April Dunlap fourth in the 100. Dunlap and Raneisha Patterson followed Bowie in the 200 with a 3-4 finish. Alexis Clark, Tamiya Butts and Monique Russell finished 4-5-6 in the 400-meter dash.

Cori Green swept three events in the meet as she won the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter races. Jasmine Newell took first place in the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, the high jump and had a second in the triple jump.

The Oxford girls dominated the relays as they captured the 100, 400 and the 800 relays. Jessica Stringer took first in the discus throw and was second in the shot put.

The Jacket boys’ team had 12 first place finishes out of 18 events. Monte Bass picked up two first place finishes in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

The Jacket relay teams finished first in the 4x100 relay and the second in the 400 and 800 relays. Dominique Williams took first in the 100-meter race, the long jump and the triple jump. Alec Young was first in the 1600 and the 3200 runs. Jacob Schwyn took first in the 800-meter run. He was also second in the 1600 and fifth in the 3200.

Conner McCall was first in the pole vault and third in the javelin. Judge Stringer was first in the discus and had a second in the shot put. Jerome Foreman had a first in the 400-meter, a fifth in the 200 meters and a third in the high jump.

It was then on to Spain Park for the Spain Park Classic where a field from 20 teams across the state awaited both the Boys and Girls teams.

The Jacket teams continued to impress as the boys took fourth place behind Vestavia Hills, Bob Jones and Spain Park. The girls came in second behind Bob Jones.

Cori Green continued to run well as she took first place in the 1600 and 3200 races that had 50 runners in the race. The Jackets took first place in the 4x800 and 4x100 relays and a second in the 4x400. Jasmine Bowie took first in the 100 meter race with Rumpsey coming in fourth . Bowie also had a fourth in the 200 meter

The boys got a big performance out of Williams as he took first place in the triple jump and was second in the long jump. Bass came in second in the 300 hurdles, while the boys’ 4x100 relay team took first place.

Williams, Rock Thomas and Trae Elston all finished in the top 13 out of 105 runners in the 100-yard dash. Williams was sixth, Thomas ninth and Elston 13th.

The Jackets will be in Carrollton for a meet this week.
