The Jackets opened the tournament with a 1-0 loss in a tiebreaker to top-ranked 3A power White Plains as the Wildcats won on a walk-off hit. Sargent fanned six and only allowed one run in taking the tough-luck loss.
The Jackets bounced back to win four straight games and advance to the finals. The Jackets only allowed one run in four games.
They ripped Pinson Valley 16-1 behind the pitching of Williams and a home run and two hits and 2 RBIs from Lexie Higgins. Gail Chase Stewart had three hits, Henderson two hits and Katey Skinner had two hits and four RBIs.
McClure drilled two home runs and drove in three and Elrod and Williams teamed to shut out Gadsden City 9-0. Haley Lyner hit her first career home run and had two hits in the game. Jen Turner had two hits. Higgins had a huge three-run homer in the rout.
Sergeant fanned 11 as the Jackets rolled past Benjamin Russell 7-0. Stewart, Tearanie Henderson and Turner had two hits apiece to lead the Jacket offensive attack. Shanda Chastain, Higgins and Lyner also added hits.
Sargent struck out four batters and only allowed two hits as the Jackets blanked St. Clair County to reach the finals with a 4-0 victory. McClure went two for three and a double and Chastain had two hits and two doubles. Meagan McCartney knocked in a run on a fielders’ choice and McClure and Chastain drove in runs with hits.
This put the Jackets in the finals against Thompson who had dispatched White Plains 6-1 in the other semi-final game. The Jackets won 2-0 earlier in the season, but it was Thompson’s turn on this day as they grinded out a 4-2 victory.
The Jackets scored in the fifth when Lyner singled and came around to score on a wild pitch. McClure smashed a home run in the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2. Turner and Henderson added hits for the Jackets.
Earlier in the week, the Jackets knocked off Auburn 10-6 at Auburn. Henderson and Turner three hits each to pace the Oxford offense. Sargent allowed two hits and struck out nine to get the win on the mound.
The Jackets also hosted 7th ranked 3A power Saks last week and dropped a 5-3 decision. Higgins led the Jacket offense with a two-run home run. Henderson drove in the other run.
The Lady Jackets ended the week with a 22-12 record on the season and are 19-7 over their last 26 games.
The Oxford Middle School softball team continued its late season surge with a runner-up finish in the Junior High Division of the Oxford Spring Sting. They had victories over Pleasant Valley and Benjamin Russell and Moody before falling to Alexandria in the finals. They suffered a 10-9 loss to Alexandria earlier in the tournament, in which the Valley Cubs rallied for six runs in the last inning to take the win.
Brittany Roszell had a walk off single to cap a three-run rally in the last inning to help the Jackets come back and beat Moody 6-5. Brittany Clevenger and Nyles Britt had big hits in that late-inning rally.
The JV team played earlier in the week and had a 1-0 loss at Auburn and lost on a walk-off error in the last inning. Jordan Skinner took the hard-luck loss on the mound and struck out four. Carlee Waits and Diedre Mitchell both went one for two on the night.
Springville came to town on the next night and the Jackets swept a twinbill 7-6 and 4-1. Lyner had three hits including a double, a stolen base and scored three runs to lead the Jackets in the 7-6 win. Morgan Whaley had a hit and 3 RBIs. Macy Mitchell drove in a pair of runs and Skinner was the winning pitcher as she came on in relief.
Skinner got the win in the 4-1 game as she only allowed two hits and one earned run. Amber Dempsey scored two runs and had two stolen bases. Karagan Timmons had two hits, two runs and a stolen base.Lyner hd two RBIs and one hit. Trantham had a double and scored a run.
